Biographical history

Swinburne was an English poet, playwright, novelist and critic.

Custodial history

The manuscript was donated to Queen's by C. L. Burton of Toronto. The provenance of the poem was questioned as it was, at one time, in the possession of Thomas James Wise a known forger and biblioklept. Investigation seemed to bare out that it was indeed an original manuscript.

Scope and content

The Swinburne manuscript, written in ink on blue paper is tipped in a buckram binding along with a letterpress copy of the poem and a pencilled note by Sir Edmund Gosse. Also includes some contemporary correspondence, sales catalogue record, etc pertaining to the provenance of the material.
