Leonard Donald Hopkins was born in Argyle, Ontario in 1930. He attended Ryerson Institute of Technology and Queen's University, graduating in History and Political Science in 1960. He trained as a teacher at North Bay Teacher's College and Ontario College of Education, Toronto and upon completion taught school for twelve years. Between 1963 and 1965 Mr. Hopkins served on the Petawawa Township Council but left municipal politics for federal. He was first elected to the House of Commons as Liberal member for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke in 1965. He was re-elected in 1968, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1980, and 1984. Much of Mr. Hopkins' work in the House of Commons has centered around his activities connected with the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association.
