William (Bill) C. James BA, BD (Queen's), MA, PhD (Chicago) taught in the Department of Religion at Queen's University for 35 years before retiring in 2008. His primary field of interest was religion in Canada, with a specific focus on religion and literature. The author of numerous books: A Fur Trader's Photographs: A. A. Chesterfield in the District of Ungava, 1901-1904 (1985); Religious Studies in Ontario: A State-of-the-Art Review (with Dan Fraiken and Harold Remus, 1992); Locations of the Sacred: Essays on Religion, Literature and Canadian Culture (1998); and God's Plenty: Religious Diversity in Kingston (2011), he also wrote numerous articles and conference papers, perhaps most notably "The Canoe Trip as Religious Quest" (1981).
James was active in the Canadian Society for the Study of Religion and the American Academy of Religion where he held a variety of roles over the many years of his association.

Alan James came to Queen's University from Perth, Ontario in 1929. He graduated with an Arts B.A. in 1933. For fifty years Al James worked in his family business which consisted of hardware and fishing tackle; two garages and auto agencies; a foundry; two ice arenas; and billboards in ten towns in Eastern Ontario. He passed away in 2000.
