George Herbert Clarke, professor and author, was born at Gravesend, County Kent, England, on August 27, 1873. At the age of eight he moved with his family to Toronto. In 1891 he received a B.A. with honours from McMaster University and in 1896 received his M.A., also from McMaster. From 1897 to 1901 Dr. Clarke did editorial work in Chicago. He then began an academic career with professorships at Mercier University, Georgia, (1901 to 1905), Peabody College, Tennessee (1908-11) and University of Tennessee and University of the South to 1925. From 1925 to 1943 Dr. Clarke was head of the Department of English at Queen's University. From 1925 he was a member of the editorial committee of the Queen's Quarterly, becoming Editor-In-Chief in 1944. He retained this position until 1953, the year of his death. Honours which Dr. Clarke received during his lifetime included an LL.D. from McMaster University (1923), a D.C.L. from Bishop's University (1944), an LL.D. from Queen's (1943), and a Lorne Pierce Medal from the Royal Society of Canada (1943). He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1930.

Kate Eastman, teacher and secretary-manager, was born in 1887 at Oshawa, Ontario. After briefly teaching in an Aboriginal school, she joined the staff of the Foreign Press Service in New York. In 1921 she met Bliss Carman and later became his secretary, managing a cross-country tour of Canada he undertook in 1923/24. In 1924, Miss Eastman moved to Vancouver where she taught literature for many years. Her frienship with Carman persisted and they maintained correspondence for a number of years. Miss Eastman died in 1979.

Wilson Pugsley MacDonald (1880-1967) was a poet based in Toronto, Ontario. MacDonald was born on May 5, 1880, in Cheapside, Ont. He attended Woodstock College and McMaster University and began publishing poetry in newspapers in 1899, often under the pseudonym Frederick MacLean. He worked as a sailor, teacher, reporter, and actor, among other jobs, until his first book, "Song of the Prairie Land and Other Poems," appeared in 1918. After that, he spent his life writing poetry and giving poetry readings and lectures throughout Canada and the United States. He died on April 8, 1967, in Toronto.

Mr. Maxwell L. Magill was a Toronto lawyer who, for reasons of health, had to stop practicing law. He had always been very much interested in history so he devoted himself to researching and publishiing articles on historical topics. At the time of his death in 1973, he was preparing to write a history of the Bank of Upper Canada.

B.K. Sandwell (1876-1954) was born in Ipswich, England and came to Canada as a child. He was educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto (B.A. 1897). In 1905 he was the drama critic at the Montreal Herald and, later, editor of the Financial Times. He taught economics at McGill University before becoming the head of the Department of English Literature at Queen's University. Sandwell served as Rector of Queen's University from 1944 to 1947. From 1932 to 1951 he was the contributing Editor of Saturday Night. He died in 1954.

Frederick Taylor (1906-1987) was born in Ottawa. He took a degree in architecture at McGill University in 1930 and subsequently studied art in England. From 1940 to 1943 he taught drawing and modeling at the McGill School of Architecture. Since 1932 Mr. Taylor has exhibited paintings, prints and drawings in all major shows in Canada. He also has had a number of one-man shows in Canada and Mexico. He died in San Miguel de Allende in 1987.

Elias Andrews was born on January 29, 1906, at Winterton (formerly Scilly Cove), Newfoundland. In 1922 he entered Methodist College, St. John's (later Prince of Wales College), where he played the organ at the "Young Men's Bible Class" at Gower St. Church.. He received a teaching certificate in 1924 and returned to Winterton as the upper school teacher. During this time he was associated with with the work of the church, particularly the musical aspects of worship.

In 1927 he became a candidate for the Ministry of the United Church and was received by the Carbonear Presbytery. He received a parish with three charges - St. George's, Heatherton, and Boswarlos - on the west coast of Newfoundland. After two years he decided to attend Pine Hill Divinity College in Halifax. He graduated in theology in 1935, was ordained by the Newfoundland Conference and appointed to Deer Lake.

In 1938 he became Professor in Philosophy and Psychology of Religion at Pine Hill and in 1939 entered the graduate school of Drew University in New Jersey. During his second year at Drew, he returned to Pine Hill in acceptance of a permanent teaching position, after completing his Ph.D qualifying examination.

In 1948 he acted as director of the School of Lay Studies at Emanuel College, Toronto and he continued in this position for three summers. In 1955 he was appointed Principal of Queen's Theological College, a position he held until 1970..

Dr. Andrews has been Chairman of the Kingston Presbytery, President of the Bay of Quinte Conference, was twice nominated for the Moderatorship of the United Church of Canada, and holds two honorary degrees - Doctor of Literature (Mount Allison University) and Doctor of Divinity (Pine Hill). In 1974 he retired as Professor at the Queen's Theological College.

In 1941 Dr Andrews married Flora Shannon Green and they had one son. Following the death of Mrs. Andrews, Dr. Andrews married Mildred Jean Caughey of Kingston in 1969.

Andrews is the author of "Modern Humanism and Christian Theism" (1939), "The Meaning of Christ for Paul" (1949), and "Apostle of Grace" (1972).

The Association of Women Electors (AWE) was founded in 1937, and it played a large role in municipal affairs until the end of its existence in 1986. It was a non-partisan, non-sectarian and non-profit organization.
