Ramsay Cook (1931-2016) was the general editor of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, and a history professor at York University for 25 years. He published widely on political and constitutional history, English-French relations, intellectual and artistic life and on Europeans' explorations and first contacts with native North Americans. His book, The Regenerators: Social Criticism in Late Victorian English Canada, was awarded the Governor General's Award. Cook was both a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Duncan Ramsey Kerr Cooke, a Lieutenant in the British military, is either the brother or nephew of Lieutenant John Cooke.

Edward Cooke (1830-1909) was a tailor, farmer, and merchant. Born in 1830, in Tamworth, England, he was one of fourteen children of William John Cooke (1796-1885) and Elizabeth Bacon. William Cooke was a tailor and builder in Tamworth, Ontario and Nuneaten, England. After his wife’s death, William and his five youngest children emigrated to Canada, arriving in Kingston in 1841.
Edward Cook was eleven when he arrived in Kingston. In 1849, Edward married Eliza Ely of New York State (1830/1831 – 1902). They had six children, four who survived to adulthood. Edward and Eliza originally worked as tailors. They also had a farm, located at Concession 2, Lot 13, Kingston Township, just west of the village of Cataraqui. Their house, at 2327 Princess Street, is now the office of a small motel. In the 1870’s, Edward ran a general store at 218 Princess Street in Kingston, on the site where the Grand Theatre now stands. After a number of years in business, the store burned down and was not reopened. Edward Cooke died in Kingston, 25 September 1909. He was predeceased by his wife, Elza, who passed away at Cataraqui, in 1902.

John Cooke was likely born in Britain in the 1780's. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Marines, 1 July 1803 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the Royal Marines, 15 August 1805. Cooke is listed in the printed Army Lists until 1825, but does not appear after 1826. His father was also named John Cooke, and his mother, or sister, may have been named Sarah. He had a brother named Jervis. There is evidence to suggest that his father was employed in Calcutta for a time. John Cooke (the younger) served on a number of ships including the Seahorse, where he first met Lord Amherst. Cooke served under Amherst again on the Alceste as the Head of the Honour Guard that accompanied the Embassy being sent to Canton. A direct relationship between John Cooke and Duncan Ramsey Kerr Cooke has not been firmly established though it is likely that they were brothers or that D. R. K. Cooke was his nephew.

Cooke's Old World Shop Limited, formerly known as Cooke's Fine Foods, began as an Italian warehouse, operated in 1865 by William Begg and Co. It was a wholesale and retail grocery, wine and spirit business. J.S. Henderson took over and ran the business from the 1880's to 1924 when the store was purchased by Hugh Cooke, a longtime employee. During the 1930's, Cooke also operated a Red and White Store next door. A fire broke out in the store in 1925 but the building was fortunately saved. During World War II thousands of specialty baskets were shipped overseas. In 1966 John Cooke took over the operation of the store and wine and beermaking supplies were added to numerous specialty foodstuffs and fresh ground coffee.
